Surrey Open Studios Taster Exhibition

Last week the taster exhibition for the Surrey Open Studios opened at the Lewis Elton Gallery on Surrey Universitiy's campus in Guildford. I'm showing two pieces: my five - section painting now called "Looking up" and my most recent lozenge - shaped painting, "Pugin Chimneys at Albury". The exhibition is on until 24th May, and it's free to enter.

Looking Up

Level 4
Cutting a white crack
across china blue
my high jet scream visible.
In my silverfish belly
a warm world of scotch on the rocks,
patient smiles, duty free.

Level 3
I’m afloat in the arms of cool draughts
my pinions tight
opposing the flow across my pinpoint eye.
I see the garden’s plan
but I’m looking for rich feasts
on the black ribbon of the M3.

Level 2
I clatter from bamboo and dogwood
Spread heavy feathers
Against the suburban sky.
A cloud below me
Busies itself about the small affairs of insects.

Level 1
I am at home here, on this Chinese jar.
My thin whorled wall
draws close about my softness.
Outside in the yellow air
midges whine and dance
and wait for evening predators.

Ground level
Here on the slate path I stand,
on my foot, a ladybird.
She turns to face me,
begins the long crawl upwards
though she has wings to fly.
